One-Family-Owned 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Coupe

This 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE coupe is one of approximately 3,800 examples produced between 1968 and 1971, and was optioned with a sunroof. It was purchased new in New York by the seller’s father and was relocated to Florida in the 1980s, where it was later inherited by the seller in 2025. It is finished in Silver Gray Metallic over black leather and is powered by a 2.8-liter inline-six paired with a floor-shifted four-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes 14″ steel wheels with covers, disc brakes, and US-specification headlights, while the interior is appointed with a two-tone “city/country” horn, three-point seat belts, power windows, a rear window defroster, and a Becker Grand Prix AM/FM radio. Service in preparation for the sale included a R134a air conditioning conversion and a valve adjustment in addition to replacement of the brake booster, tie rod assembly, and spark plugs. This W111 coupe is now offered with a data card, factory manuals, a stamped maintenance booklet, service records, spare parts, and a clean Florida title in the seller’s name.
The car came finished from the factory in two-tone Silver Gray Metallic (180) with a black (040) roof, and the seller notes that it was repainted in Silver Gray Metallic in the 1980s. It was specified with a sunroof and also features a wrap-around rear window, front vent windows, a left-side mirror, US-specification headlights, and chrome bumpers.
The 14″ steel wheels feature bright-finished covers with color-matched centers and are mounted with Cooper tires measuring 205/75. The suspension includes an independent double-wishbone front setup with coil springs along with a rear single-joint swing axle. Stopping power is provided by power-assisted disc brakes at each corner. The brake booster and tie rod assembly were replaced in April 2025.
The cabin features individual front seats with headrests and a rear bench upholstered in black leather, and wood trim accents the dash and A-pillars. The seller notes that the car retains its factory-installed Becker Grand Prix AM/FM radio, optional rear speaker with balance control, and five three-point seatbelts. Amenities also include power windows, a dashboard-mounted clock, a rear window defroster, air conditioning, and a cigarette lighter. The air conditioning system was converted to utilize R134a refrigerant in April 2025, at which time the driver’s seat was repaired and the shifter bushings were replaced. The heater levers are broken and there is a tear in the driver’s seat.
The two-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and fronts a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer has rolled over and shows 38k miles, approximately 250 of which were added under current ownership. The car is equipped with a two-tone “city/country” horn.
The 2.8-liter M130 inline-six features Bosch mechanical fuel injection and was factory rated at 160 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. The engine was rebuilt approximately 50k miles ago in April 1980 by Nick’s Foreign Auto Repair of Rio, Florida, and the associated invoice is shown in the gallery. The exhaust system was also replaced at this time. Work in April 2025 involved adjusting the valves and replacing the spark plugs along with changing the oil.
Engine stamping 130980-12-025735 is shown above, and a corresponding number is listed on the data card.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission.
Service records from over the years accompany the vehicle in addition to factory manuals, a stamped maintenance booklet, and ownership documentation.
