Vortec-Powered 1967 Chevrolet P20 Flxible Motorhome

This 1967 Flxible motorhome was built on a Chevrolet P20 chassis by Flxible Southern of Evergreen, Alabama, and purchased as a project by the current owner in 2022. A subsequent refurbishment involved fitting a 6.0-liter Vortec V8 and a four-speed automatic transmission sourced from a 2003 Chevrolet Express, replacing the interior, plumbing, and electrical system, overhauling the brakes, stripping the exterior to bare aluminum, and repainting the trim in green. A Carefree awning is positioned on the camp side, and the motorhome also has a Lifan generator, holding tanks, sliding and jalousie windows, and holding tanks. Camping amenities include maple paneling, a bathroom, and a dinette that converts to a bed as well as a house air conditioner and furnace, a refrigerator, a cooktop, a microwave oven, and a Pioneer Bluetooth receiver. This Flxible motorhome is now offered by the seller in Nebraska on behalf of their spouse with a build book, records, a Flxible retrospective reference book, a spare set of wheels and tires, a pair of Zip Dee outdoor chairs, and a clean Iowa title in the owner’s name.
The Flxible Company was founded in 1913, and in 1964 it acquired Southern Coach. The new subsidiary was renamed Southern Flxible and continued to manufacture small transit buses and motorhomes. The aluminum body of this example was separated from the frame and stripped to bare metal, and the trim and front bumper were painted green before a ceramic coating was applied. Additional work involved replacing and repositioning the camp-side windows, installing replacement glass and weatherstripping, and rebuilding the vacuum-operated windshield wiper mechanism. Further elements include side and rear entry doors, a sliding driver’s door, a rear step bumper, LED taillights, a Carefree awning, and utility connections for water and 30-amp electrical service. A Lifan 3.6kW remote-controlled inverter generator is housed in a dedicated compartment, as is a 12-gallon propane tank. The street-side window shades do not roll down.
The 20″ alloy wheels were sourced from a 2022 Chevrolet truck per the seller and are mounted using bolt pattern adapters. They wear 275/65 Goodyear Wrangler tires that show 2021 production date codes, and a spare tire on a steel wheel is secured to the underside. A spare set of wheels with bias-ply tires showing 2022 date codes are included in the sale, and some of the gallery photos show them mounted on the motorhome. Work during the refurbishment involved stripping and repainting the frame in black, overhauling the Hydro-Vac four-wheel drum brake system, fitting a rear anti-sway bar, replacing the suspension bushings, and adding a power steering box sourced from a Chevrolet Kodiak 5500.
The forward compartment houses twin captain’s chairs upholstered in black vinyl with cloth inserts. Insulation and sound-damping material have been applied throughout the interior, and other details include cruise control, a CD stereo, overhead storage, an articulating sun visor, an adjustable handbrake, and rubber floor mats. An Edge Insight data monitor display panel is mounted to the A-Pillar, and a Voyager trailer brake controller is located beneath the dash. The seller tells us that the wiring harness, body control module, tilt-adjustable steering column, four-spoke steering wheel, and instrument panel were sourced from a 2003 Chevrolet Express van. The digital odometer shows 60k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership following the build. True mileage is unknown.
The living quarters are outfitted with 3/4-inch maple paneling that is finished on both sides along with woodgrain vinyl flooring, LED lighting, a power-operated ceiling vent, and a Pioneer CD stereo with Bluetooth connectivity. The dinette has bench seating upholstered in black cloth along with a telescoping composite tabletop that can be lowered to form a sleeping surface. A lavatory is positioned at the front of the cabin and houses a cassette toilet, while a separate shower room has a tethered sprayer, a lighted mirror, and a power-operated vent. The water system has a 40-gallon freshwater tank, a gray water tank, a demand-service pump, and a pressure tank.
The galley is equipped with a black-finished sink and faucet, a polished countertop, under-cabinet storage, and an exhaust vent. Another countertop is located across the walkway alongside drawer storage and a hanger closet. The dual-fuel refrigerator, two-burner cooktop, microwave oven, six-gallon water heater, WFCO electrical distribution panel, furnace, and house air conditioner were sourced from a donor RV per the seller.
The fuel-injected Vortec 6.0-liter V8, 4L80E four-speed automatic transmission, and ECU were sourced from a 2003 Chevrolet Express van. Equipment includes wrapped exhaust headers, electric cooling fans, an aluminum radiator, and aluminum coolers for the engine oil and transmission fluid.
Fabricated driveshafts were fitted during the refurbishment. Additional underside photos can be viewed in the gallery below.
A book chronicling the build will accompany the motorhome and is detailed in the photo and video galleries. Also included in the sale are a Flxible retrospective and reference book, build records, manufacturer’s literature for installed components, and a pair of Zip Dee outdoor chairs.
